The Innovation Breakfast series is a collaboration between Federation University, Latrobe Valley Authority and Regional Development Victoria. The event brings together community, government, industry and education to generate creative thinking and inspire change in Gippsland.
Our first breakfast event of the year will reflect on progress from the Hazelwood Health Study, designed to monitor the long-term health impacts of Latrobe Valley community members following the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire event.
The mine fire was a significant event in Victoria’s history, shrouding our region in smoke and ash for 6 weeks. At the time of the mine fire, the community raised concerns about potential health impacts, but there was little research to call on to inform policy responses. Ten years on, the Hazelwood Health Study has produced a wealth of information, and the region has been reshaped by community-wide initiatives. This session will involve key researchers and community stakeholders in a discussion about findings, lessons and future directions.
Our presenters and panel members will include:
- Dr Matthew Carroll, Co-Principal Investigator and Psychological Impacts Stream Lead, Hazelwood Health Study; Senior Research Fellow, Monash Rural Health, Monash University
- Dr Sue Yell, Community Wellbeing Stream Lead, Hazelwood Health Study; Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Education, Arts & Community, Federation University
- Dr Lieke Scheepers, Latrobe Early Life Follow-up Study Research Fellow; Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania
- Jane Anderson, Latrobe Health Advocate
