Transforming Coal Communities: Lessons from Saxony, Germany

Join us in person at the Morwell Innovation Centre to watch a live webinar broadcast from Germany, exploring how Saxony is navigating structural change as coal mining ends.

What to Expect

The session will examine:
✅ Data-driven decision-making, AI, and innovation systems in regional transformation.
✅ Effective growth pathways—factoring in demographic shifts, industrial diversification, and mine site rehabilitation.
✅ Key tools, strategies, and policy interventions supporting economic and social transitions.

Dr Friedrich Dornbusch, Head of Regional Transformation and Innovation Policy at Fraunhofer ISI Leipzig, will lead the webinar alongside Dr Benjamin Klement.

At the Morwell Innovation Centre, Chris Buckingham (regional development leader) and Professor Thomas Baumgartl (Director, Future Regions Centre, Federation University) will provide insights on how these lessons apply to Australia—particularly the Latrobe Valley.

Following the webinar, Chris and Thomas will be available for further discussion with attendees in the room.
